Main Principles

Main Principles for Outdoor Lighting Ordinance

The City's Main Regulations for outdoor lighting include shielding, brightness/color, and total lumen output. See below for examples of each:

1. SHIELDING:
Light should be directed downward and only targeting where needed. Shielding also prevents light trespass onto neighboring properties.

2. BRIGHTNESS/COLOR:
Use the LOWEST light level required, keeping in mind reflective surrounding surfaces. Furthermore, OUTDOOR LIGHTING MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 3000K – Be sure to check the specs on your fixtures when selecting. See the photo below to see where 3000K falls in the spectrum.

3. TOTAL LUMEN OUTPUT:
RESIDENTIAL: ONLY 25,000 lumens per acre are permitted on residential property.
COMMERCIAL: ONLY 100,000 lumens per acre are permitted on a commercial property.
